Carmanah Point
West Coast Trail

Located on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island, Carmanah Point is pure Pacific Ocean coastline and this sculpture represents the fierce winter storms that lash its shore, sending sea spray and surf over the bluffs.

The base represents the solid rock cliffs of the rugged coastline that stop the advance of the crashing waves..

Lynn Creek
Old Growth

In British Columbia there are still some isolated and often

unprotected stands of magnificent old growth forests. These contain trees some of which are over 800 years old.

Irreplaceable and majestic, when one walks among them you are walking in a cathedral built by nature, far grander than anything built by man.

Lynn Creek in North Vancouver still has a few of these trees, hidden away.

Salish Sea Kelp Bed

Kelp beds along the coast are an important ecological part of the bio system.  They offer shelter, food and are the gardens of the waters. Herring lay their eggs in them, otters use them as a bed to float on and divers thread their way through the waving trunks.

Pacific Storm

Traveling to watch the violent storms along the West Coast is a popular experience.  Usually in the winter months, massive weather systems strike the shore and create spectacular waves exploding over the cliffs.

Pachena Point

An homage to the resilience and density of the trees that grow along the west coast of Vancouver Island.  The winds bend them into a permanent archway, leaning inland but always enduring.  The forest along the coast can be so dense that survivors of the many shipwrecks along the coast would reach land but perish, unable to penetrate the forests to reach safety.

Lightning Strike

Through the high bench land in Lynn Creek, there are a number of cedar stumps, charred and split from lightning strikes.  They often act as nurse logs for new growth and the regeneration of the forest floor.

Long Beach Islet #1

Just off Long Beach on the West Coast of Vancouver Island are a series of small islets.  Rocky, pounded by surf and storms, they still have stunted, gnarled and incredibly hardy trees growing on them.  The trees lean towards the main island, bent by the constant winds.

I fell in love with this unique piece of wood with a knothole right through it. It's like a portal to another time of vast forests and wilderness.  Ok a bit fanciful but what the heck, I'm an artist.

Fire

One of the biggest concerns on the West Coast is the ever present danger of Forest Fires.  However fires are not all bad. In moderation they renew the forest, opening up dense areas to let light in and encourage new growth.  The wood base is a unique cedar root that has wrapped itself around a rock.  The slate base is from Pender Island.
